Today I meditate and give thanks for every experience that my work gives me.<\/p>\n

The story goes that one day a different kind of child was born. He just looked around and smiled. His eyes shone when he saw friends arrive, as if their visit were the most beautiful gift. I think he might have been able to see God's presence in everyone. It's as if those stories we're told, that God is within us, were real. An absurd thought, perhaps.<\/p>\n

He continued watching how his life was. He played with his top, he played with the rubber bands or tires of his car, he tried to color, but suddenly he longed to taste those colored pencils.<\/p>\n

Have you noticed that when you look at crayons with their variety of colors, they might look tempting? I wonder what they taste like\u2026 Right?<\/p>\n

He was so pure that his thoughts reflected joy, and everything around him was a source of laughter and play. So, wanting to savor a delicious crayon and taking immediate action was a matter of seconds\u2014the same amount of time it took to spit it out.<\/p>\n

She had a favorite toy. Yes, the one that spun around, lit up with colored lights, and played songs. She could spend hours enjoying it and smiling. She was so happy.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the world watched him as if being happy, laughing, hugging, and playing weren't good things. His little friends overheard the adults saying something was wrong. Then, the laughter of those around him began to fade.<\/p>\n

One day, visitors arrived at Raulito's house, as we'll call the boy in the story. The family had two children. Raulito watched from the window as the children approached. They were laughing and playing with a tennis ball, and he, excited, looked forward to playing with them.<\/p>\n

Upon entering, they were asked to remain in the living room. Raulito approached with his beautiful smile, looked them in the eyes, and ran to his room to find his favorite toy: the spinning top with lights and songs. For him, it was a way of welcoming them, of sharing something he cherished.<\/p>\n

The children, eager to play; the parents, deep in serious conversation and trying to prevent their children from showing their joy. Meanwhile, Raulito smiled, oblivious to what was happening. Perhaps he thought the children were sick.<\/p>\n

Raulito would interrupt the conversation to touch his mom's face, tell her, "I love you," smile at her, and run back to playing.<\/p>\n

I remember one day, he took a saucepan and a metal fork and started banging on it. For him it was music, emotions, melodies, a celebration. For others it was a ruckus.<\/p>\n

Often, the commotion of some is the expression of joy for others. The silence of some can be meditation, inspiration, and for others, it's a space where their mind screams, demands, and torments them. But it is still silence.<\/p>\n

Raulito continued to grow and started school. What a joy! New friends, games, and activities adapted to his needs.<\/p>\n

So what happens then? They expect to see a Raulito who goes to school, one whose laughter they wanted to silence, whose joy they wanted to lower, and without realizing it, what was happening was that they unconsciously wanted to dim his brilliance.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we associate laughter with a lack of professionalism or education, when it is actually a powerful tool for connection, for giving love, and for spreading the joy of living.<\/p>\n

Laughter provides that emotional well-being we so desperately seek, like a needle in a haystack, and it's truly within reach of taking a deep breath, looking each other in the eyes, and giving a smile.<\/p>\n

We are born with these simple steps, but they become contaminated.<\/p>\n

Raulito could bring any diagnosis that comes to mind, but it could also be you and me if we hadn't let ourselves be impacted by society and its standards.<\/p>\n

There are so many scientific advances that, sometimes, they set us back.<\/p>\n

Raulito grew up, an adult with the soul of a child. His parents grew old. He was always accompanied by a spinning top, perhaps not the one he had as a child, but one with lights and music that made him dream and laugh.<\/p>\n

Ra\u00fal already lives in a senior center for people with intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n

On one occasion, Ra\u00fal fell ill and was hospitalized. Don't worry, it was nothing serious.<\/p>\n

The contradictory aspect of this story is that those in charge, who know their preferences and intellectual capabilities, are being directed by a system that sees numbers and conditions. It sees an age and might say, "They have asthma.".<\/p>\n

We began to see a restless, sad Ra\u00fal. They put a television on for him, who knows if it was to show the news or movies. They arrive, and seeing someone who they understand doesn't understand them, they take his vital signs and leave in silence. Sometimes, they even come to clean his room with fear.<\/p>\n

Where am I going with all this?<\/p>\n

A person with the capacity of a child wants their toys, wants to laugh, wants to look people in the eyes and feel loved, wants words of affection.<\/p>\n

Raul wants his top.<\/p>\n

What are we doing as a society to turn things around?<\/p>\n

Thanks to medical advances, many people are now called "grandparents" because of their age. And these are children who lost their families, children searching for a smile, children who tell us:<\/p>\n

\u201cStop, don\u2019t rush.\u201d.<\/p>\n

For each grandparent who has an emergency bag in case they go to the hospital, make sure to include something that means a "top" to them.<\/p>\n

It could be a stuffed animal, a doll, a coloring book, a toy piano, a puppet, anything that makes them smile from the bottom of their heart.<\/p>\n

We talk a lot about emotional well-being, today I invite you, as a laughter therapist, as someone dedicated to bringing joy and laughter to tired, exhausted, sad people, to join the Golden Laughter community.<\/p>\n

Give a smile to our senior citizens who today are crying out for laughter.<\/p>\n

It's not relevant to bring up the reasons why they lost their desire to laugh. What we do need are agents, teams of soldiers who will join together to spark an epidemic of laughter and joy.<\/p>\n

Enough of telling the world what overwhelms us. Trust yourself and tell the world how big your heart is.<\/p>\n

Embrace without fear, laugh until your stomach hurts, and spread "the Joy of Living" to others.<\/p>\n
